The first reference to a Castle at Knaresborough was documented in the early 1100's. There are plenty of things to do including tours, trying on chain mail and Civil War costumes, playing Medieval games and finding out all about food, drink and education all those centuries ago.
The Castle standands over the river Nidd and boasts some interesting features such as the King's Tower, dungeons, a Tudor Courtroom (now a museum) and a Sallyport. It is possible to walk through the Sallyport, which is an eighty foot secret underground tunnel which provided an access and egress route in times of seige.
